81% –  that’s the visa refusal rate for India in December 2024, according to a recent IRCC report

The number is alarming, but not surprising. Canada has been tightening temporary resident approvals across all categories – study permits, work permits, spousal open work permits, postgraduate work permits, and visitor visas, all in an effort to bring down the overall number of temporary residents to 5% of Canada’s total population, as outlined in the Immigration Levels Plan.

If you’re still planning to apply for a visitor visa, be ready for a tougher process, and possibly a refusal before you see any good news. But if you want to improve your chances, preparation is everything.

Here’s what I tell my clients:

Start with a clear, detailed purpose of visit.
