Why Apply for Citizenship in Canada?

Permanent residence is a milestone. Citizenship is the destination. Here’s what changes the day you take the path:

One of the most powerful travel documents in the world, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 destinations. No more PR card renewals, no more residency obligations tied to your status.

Citizenship in Canada means full participation in democracy federal, provincial, and municipal elections all open up to you.

Unlike permanent residence, citizenship cannot lapse because you spent too long abroad. Once granted, your status is yours for life, and you can pass it on to your children.

Certain federal government positions and security-clearance roles are reserved for citizens. Citizenship in Canada removes the last barrier between you and any career.

Canada permits dual and multiple citizenship, so in most cases you won’t need to give up your current nationality to become Canadian. (We’ll help you confirm your home country’s rules, too.)

Take the First Step Today

Citizenship in Canada isn’t just paperwork it’s the moment your future here becomes permanent. Whether you’re a permanent resident ready to apply or you’ve just discovered you may have a claim by descent, the best time to start is now, before processing queues grow longer.

Am I Eligible for Citizenship in Canada?

To qualify under the standard grant process, you must meet the requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

Permanent Resident Status

You must be a permanent resident of Canada. Your PR card can be expired at the time you apply what matters is that your status is valid, with no unfulfilled conditions, no removal order, and no ongoing review for immigration fraud.

Physical Presence: 1,095 Days

You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) during the five years immediately before you apply. Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a PR can count as half-days, up to a maximum of 365 credited days.

Tax Filing

You must have filed income taxes in Canada for at least three years within the five-year eligibility period, if you were required to under the Income Tax Act.

Language Ability

Applicants aged 18 to 54 must demonstrate speaking and listening skills in English or French at Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) / NCLC level 4 or higher. Accepted proof includes approved test results, diplomas, and certificates.

The Citizenship Test

If you're between 18 and 54, you'll take a 45-minute test with 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions on Canadian history, values, institutions, and symbols. You need 15 correct answers (75%) to pass, and you get up to three attempts. Everything is drawn from the official study guide, Discover Canada and our clients receive structured prep materials and practice tests so they walk in confident.

No Prohibitions

Certain criminal charges, convictions, or security issues inside or outside Canada can make you temporarily ineligible. Time spent in prison, on parole, or on probation doesn't count toward your physical presence. If anything in your history concerns you, talk to us before you apply timing can make all the difference.

How the Application Process Works

Applying for citizenship in Canada is a multi-stage journey. Here’s how we manage it with you, end to end:

Eligibility Assessment

We review your immigration history, calculate your physical presence precisely (including pre-PR half-day credits), verify your tax filing record, and flag any risks before a single form is filled.

Document Preparation

We provide a complete, IRCC-ready package that includes passports, PR documents, language proof, photos, and translations. Incomplete applications are returned, costing you months. Ours do not.

Application Submission

Most adults can now apply online. We prepare and submit your application, pay careful attention to every declaration, and confirm receipt so your file enters processing without delay.

Test & Interview Preparation

Once IRCC invites you to the citizenship test, you'll have 30 days to take it. We provide study plans, question banks based on Discover Canada, and mock tests until you're consistently scoring well above the pass mark.

The Oath Ceremony

The final, unforgettable step. You'll receive your ceremony date, take the Oath of Citizenship, and receive your citizenship certificate. From that moment, you hold citizenship in Canada and can apply for your Canadian passport immediately.

New for 2026: Citizenship by Descent Under Bill C-3

This is the biggest change to citizenship in Canada in over a decade. In December 2025, the Government of Canada passed Bill C-3, removing the old “first-generation limit” that prevented many people born abroad to Canadian parents from inheriting citizenship.

What this means in practice:

IRCC is expecting tens of thousands of applications under the new rules, which means processing queues are growing. If you think you have a claim, the smartest move is to establish it now. Our team specializes in tracing eligibility, gathering historical records (birth, marriage, and naturalization documents across generations), and submitting complete proof-of-citizenship applications the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get citizenship in Canada?

Processing times vary, but most complete applications are finalized within 8 to 14 months from submission to oath. Incomplete or inaccurate files take far longer which is exactly what professional preparation prevents.

The government fee for an adult grant application is currently $630 CAD ($100 for minors). Our service fees are quoted upfront after your free assessment.

Canada allows dual citizenship. Whether your home country does is a separate question we’ll help you check before you commit.

No but citizenship in Canada is a one-shot process where errors cost months and refusals cost more. Professional review is inexpensive insurance on one of the most important applications of your life.

Travel is fine, as long as you meet the 1,095-day physical presence requirement within your five-year window. We calculate this to the day, using your complete travel history.

Under the new Bill C-3 rules, quite possibly even beyond the first generation. Book a descent assessment and we’ll trace your claim.
