Great news for those looking to work in Canada!
The Canadian government is creating a new immigration stream just for foreign workers in agriculture and fish processing. This could open the door for many people looking for job opportunities in farming, food, and seafood sectors.

🌾 What Is This New Work Stream?

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) announced in its 2025–2026 plan that they’re working on a new program to hire foreign workers in two key sectors:

  • Agriculture (Farming, Food production)
  • Fish Processing (Seafood factories, Packing units)

Here’s what we know so far:

✅ A sector-specific work permit will be created — meaning it’s only for jobs in farming and fish processing.
✅ It may include partner country agreements — making it easier to hire from specific countries.
✅ IRCC and ESDC (Employment and Social Development Canada) will work together on this program.

🤔 Why Is Canada Doing This?

Canada is facing big labour shortages in farms and food sectors. Many local workers don’t take these jobs, so foreign workers play a huge role.

The government wants to:

  • Help Canadian employers find workers.
  • Fill gaps left by the recent closure of the Agri-Food Pilot.
  • Speed up work permit processing in essential sectors like farming and food production.

📉 What Happened to the Old Program?

Earlier this year, the Agri-Food Pilot was shut down. It used to help workers in:

  • Meat factories
  • Flower farms
  • Animal farms

The program reached its application limit in February 2025 and closed down after running for five years. Now, this new stream may act as a better, more focused replacement.

🔜 What’s Next?

This new stream is still under development, but is expected to roll out in 2025 or 2026.

The Canadian government will:

  • Get public feedback
  • Finalize policies
  • Announce details soon
